Welcome to Another Edition of Our Newsletter! This week, we’re diving into a topic that many of us can relate to yet rarely acknowledge consciously: The “Bonus” Status of Working Women.
For many women, the concept of work-life balance comes with added layers. Culturally, women are often seen as the “bonus” or “reward” of the family—a supportive figure who gracefully balances everything around her, from career to household. When she receives support for her career ambitions, it’s treated as a blessing, something to be grateful for, as if it’s an exception rather than the norm. But why is this so? Why do we view a woman’s career as something unusual, unlike her husband, father, or brother’s ambitions?
How Can Women Lead Rather Than Follow?
Instead of just participating in an endless race to meet everyone’s expectations, women can step up as leaders by taking charge of their own well-being. Being a leader in your life means setting goals that matter to you, making conscious choices, and not waiting for permission or validation.
Here are some ideas for leading your life with purpose and self-assurance:
- Set Personal Goals: Think about what you want to achieve, both professionally and personally. Let these goals guide your actions rather than simply responding to others’ expectations.
- Invest in Yourself: Take time to develop new skills, pursue hobbies, or work on personal growth. Self-improvement isn’t selfish—it’s empowering.
- Seek a Support System: Surround yourself with people who understand and support your goals. Whether it’s friends, mentors, or family, a support system helps you stay grounded and motivated.
Eliminate the Fear of Contentment
We’re often caught in a cycle of endless responsibilities—meeting work demands, managing family needs, and pursuing career growth, all while ensuring everyone else’s comfort. In doing so, many women tend to neglect their own needs, particularly when it comes to health, both mental and physical.
Think about it—when was the last time you prioritized a workout, enjoyed a relaxing meal, or pursued a hobby without guilt? We often ignore our health until something goes wrong. Even then, we treat it as just another inconvenience to manage. We’re so focused on our duties that we rarely stop to ask, “What if I took a break today? What if I set aside time for something I enjoy, without feeling guilty?”
Stop Living Like Machines
In this constant cycle of duties, we end up living like machines, operating on a schedule without pausing to reflect. The idea of “me time” is often treated as a luxury rather than a necessity, and we sometimes feel selfish even for considering it. But we aren’t machines—we’re human beings with needs, emotions, and dreams. Living on autopilot only leads to burnout, frustration, and a sense of incompleteness.
Reflect and Recharge
Ultimately, contentment doesn’t come from pleasing everyone or meeting every expectation. It comes from living in alignment with what truly matters to us. So, take a moment to pause and ask yourself, “Am I truly happy with how I’m living my life? What can I change to feel more fulfilled?”
Instead of running on autopilot, let’s aim to live intentionally. We deserve to pursue our dreams, take care of our health, and enjoy a life filled with purpose and joy—not merely as “bonuses” for our families but as individuals with our own aspirations and ambitions. Balance is possible, but it starts with being kind to ourselves and recognizing our worth beyond any role we play.
